Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) technology is used to provide high-speed internet and telecommunications services through optical fiber networks. In Nepal, several internet service providers, including WorldLink Communications, have deployed GPON technology to deliver high-speed internet access to customers.


GPON technology offers advantages such as faster internet speeds, lower latency, and increased bandwidth compared to traditional copper-based networks. It has helped improve internet connectivity in Nepal, especially in urban areas.

Alongside the network upgrade, WorldLink has also announced the availability of a new unlimited 1Gbps FTTH plan.


They also enabled voice call service (same as legacy PSTN phone) in the FTTH lines. However, to enable the International call (ISD) service in the FTTH phone aka IP phone, you need to visit a nearby Ntc counter.


G-PON, or Gigabit Passive Optical Network, is a type of optical fiber communication technology used for delivering high-speed internet, television, and other services to homes and businesses. It's a passive optical network because it doesn't rely on active components (like amplifiers) to transmit data over long distances; instead, it uses passive optical splitters and combiners.

WorldLink Communications is one of the largest internet service providers in Nepal. It has played a significant role in expanding internet access and connectivity in the country. WorldLink was founded in 1995 and has since been a major player in Nepal's telecommunications sector, providing broadband internet services, among other services. 


1**Nepal Telecom**: This is the largest and government-owned ISP in Nepal. They offer a range of internet services, including ADSL, FTTH, and mobile data.


2. **WorldLink Communications**: WorldLink is one of the leading private ISPs in Nepal, offering a variety of internet plans, including fiber-optic connections and wireless broadband.


3. **Subisu CableNet**: Subisu is another prominent ISP offering broadband internet services through cable and fiber-optic connections.


4. **Vianet Communications**: Vianet provides high-speed internet services through fiber-optic technology and has a significant presence in Kathmandu Valley.


5. **Classic Tech**: Classic Tech is known for its broadband internet services, including FTTH and corporate solutions.


6. **Broadlink Network and Communication**: Broadlink offers both residential and corporate internet services, including wireless and fiber-optic connections.

Nokia said its Gigabyte Passive Optical Network (GPON) solutions will help Subisu to expand its network and reach new broadband customers.

Here are some key features of G-PON:

1. **High Speed**: G-PON is capable of delivering gigabit-level speeds, making it suitable for bandwidth-intensive applications like high-definition video streaming, online gaming, and large file downloads.

2. **Shared Infrastructure**: Multiple users or subscribers share the same optical fiber infrastructure, with data separation ensured through time-division multiplexing (TDM). This means efficient use of fiber resources.

3. **Distance**: G-PON can transmit data over relatively long distances, often up to 20 kilometers or more, without significant signal loss.

4. **Splitter-based Architecture**: Passive optical splitters are used to divide the optical signal among multiple subscribers. This minimizes the need for active equipment in the field, reducing maintenance costs.

5. **Bi-Directional**: G-PON supports both upstream (from the subscriber to the service provider) and downstream (from the service provider to the subscriber) data transmission.

6. **Security**: G-PON networks typically incorporate encryption and security features to protect the confidentiality and integrity of data.

G-PON is commonly used by internet service providers to provide high-speed internet access to homes and businesses in a cost-effective and efficient manner. It's part of the broader family of PON technologies, which includes other variants like EPON (Ethernet PON) and XG-PON (10-Gigabit PON), each with its own specifications and capabilities.
